QUESTION:
Assalamu’alaikum, Ask Ustad. As usual, after the morning prayer, we gather for a moment to discuss the condition of the mosque. Then one of the congregation, as usual, recited the Koran loudly, together in the same room. What is our attitude, keep quiet and listen or continue (Nur Aswandi)
ANSWER
Wa’alaikumussalam wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh
Continue the meeting, he should be the one to lower his voice.
There is also a verse:
{And when the Koran is recited, then listen and be silent so that you may receive mercy.}
And when the Qur’an is read, then listen and be silent, so that you may receive mercy. [Surat Al-A’raf: 204]
This means that if you read the Koran while praying, you should pay attention.
According to Ibnu Abbas, the verse above, namely the command to listen seriously and to be silent when reading the Koran, is a command in obligatory prayers.
He says:
This means in obligatory prayers
Namely in the obligatory prayers.
Likewise, As Suddi, he said that the meaning of this verse applies in prayer.
Likewise, Ibn Zaid said:
This is when the imam stands for prayer, so listen to him and listen
This is if the imam has performed the prayer then listen and pay attention.
(Tafsir ath Thabari, vol. 10, p. 663)
These are the majority sects except Hanafi. For Hanafis this happens in prayer and outside prayer. (Al Mausu’ah Al Fiqhiyyah Al Kuwaitiyah, vol.4, p.86)
