Holding Mabit on New Year’s Eve. What is Tasyabuh/Bid’ah?

QUESTION

Assalamualaikum ustadz.
If on New Year’s Eve Muslims hold congregational prayers/istighosah or mabit, is that considered tasyabuh?

ANSWER

Wa’alaikumussalam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh

It is heresy if the event on that night is considered special and has special merit if it is held on New Year’s Eve.

But if the event is for taqlilul mafasid (minimizing damage), nahi munkar, and don’t consider the night special, then it’s okay. The rule:

Everything is intentional

Evaluate actions based on their meaning

Especially if you have a regular recitation schedule that night, when the qadarullah coincides with New Year’s Eve, that’s okay. Don’t take a break from recitation just because it coincides with New Year’s Eve.
