Names that are prohibited in Islam

QUESTION:

May God’s peace, blessings and mercy be with you

Ustadz… I want to ask, is it true that the names Al-Mubarak and Khoirun Nisak are makruh?

ANSWER

And may God’s peace, blessings and mercy be with you

Rasulullah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam prohibited several names. Samurah bin Jundub said:

Rasulullah SAW forbade us to give four names to our servants: Aflah, Rabah, Yassar, and Nafi’.

We were forbidden by the Prophet to name our children with four names:

– Aflah (win)
– Rabah (lucky)
– Yasar (easy)
– Nafi’ (helpful)

(HR. Muslim no. 3983)

Makruh because if children named like that are asked: “Is there a Rabah?” Then he answered: “Nothing”, as if it was a prayer for no luck.

In the hadith:

Don’t call your child Rabah, Nafalah, Yasar, or Najih. It says: Is he a sinner? It says: No

Don’t name your children: Rabah, Aflah, Yasar, and Najih. Because if asked: “is he there?” Then answered: “No” (HR. At Tirmidhi no. 2836, hasan sahih)

Then what about Mubarak and Khair? Imam Ibnu Qayyim Al Jauziyah explained:

And in this sense it is a blessing, success, good, favor, blessing, and the like. The meaning of the Prophet Muhammad SAW who did not like to call people four people is contained in it, because it was said, “Do you have any goodness?” Do you feel happy? Did you get any blessings? So he says: No, and the heart becomes disgusted with it and becomes irritated by it, and enters the door of hateful logic.

The same meaning includes (names such as) MUBARAK, Mufliḥ, KHAIR, Surur, Ni’mah, and the like. Because the meaning that caused the Prophet ﷺ to hate being called by these four names is also found in these names. Because people can say: ‘Do you have goodness?’, ‘Do you have joy?’, ‘Do you have favors?’ then answered: ‘No.’ So the heart becomes uncomfortable listening to it and feels unlucky because of it, and that is included in the chapter of vile speech.” (Tuhfatul Maudud, p. 116)
