1⃣ Definition of Wara ‘

Imam Al Jurjani:

This is to avoid suspicion for fear of falling into the taboo, and said: this is a beautiful business.

“Wara ‘is avoiding faint things (doubtful) for fear of falling into the illicit one. There are also those who say: that wara’ is constantly carrying out good practices.” (At ta’rifaat, p. 124)

Imam Ash Shan’ani:

The initial piety was to stop inses and embarrass them, then borrowed to stop being permitted and permitted

“Wara ‘basically is to refrain from things that are forbidden and be careful of it, then this meaning is used to refrain from things that are changed and halal.” (At Tanwir Syarh Al Jami ‘Ash Shagir, Volume. 8, p. 240)

2⃣ Implementation of wara ‘

A. Wara ‘opposes this problem

Rasulullah (may peace on it) said:

So, anyone who is afraid of suspicion, he has given him debt and presentation, and anyone who falls into suspicion, he falls in matters that are prohibited as pioneers, who will take care of the people.

Anyone who avoids vague (syubhat) he has taken care of his religion and honor. And whoever falls into things that are not clear he has fallen into illegal matters, like a shepherd near someone else’s fence. (Hours. Bukhari and Muslim)

Leave what he showed what he didn’t see

“Leave whatever you doubt, whatever you do not doubt.” (Hours in Tirmidzi No. 2518.

‘Adi bin Hatim said:

“O messenger of Allah, I let go of my boat with Bismillah’s speech to hunt, and then I found that other dogs do the hunt” Rasulullah (hopefully peace) said, “Don’t eat (hunting that you can) because you mention Bismillah is just your dog, and other dogs are not.” (Hours. Bukhari and Muslim)

Rasulullah ﷺ gave this kind of fatwa in the matter of doubt because he was worried that the dog that pounced on the hunted animal was a dog that was released without mentioning Bismillah. In this fatwa the Messenger of Allah ﷺ showed the caution of things that are still vague about halal or haram, because of the causes that are still unclear.

B. Wara ‘against valuable things (unusual)

Allah Ta’ala says:

And those who come from exposed language

“And those who stay away from (actions and words) are useless.” (Surah Al-Mu’minun: 3)

Rasulullah (may peace on it) said:

From someone’s kindness: He left him what he didn’t mean

“One sign of the goodness of a person’s religion is that he leaves without permission.” (Hours in Tirmidzi, Hasan)

I did not achieve that it was one of the right people until he mentioned what he was not careful in what he was in misfortune

“A servant did not reach the level of piety until he left something that could be careful about him as a forbidden thing.” (HR. Di Tirmidzi No. 2451, in Tirmidzi said: “Hasan Hasan Gharib, we did not know it except from this road.” Al Hakim at Al Mustadrak No. 7899, he said: “

Al Hasan Al Bashri Rahimahullah said:

One sign of the symptoms of God to the servant is to make his work in what He doesn’t mean

“Among the signs of Allah Ta’ala has turned away from a servant, he made him busy with things that were not useful.” (Imam Ibn Abdil Bar, in Tamhid, 9/200)

Imam Ibn Hajar Al Haitami said:

And I say: this is half of Islam, but it is all Islam

“I say: even that is half of Islam, even that is the whole Islam.” (Fathul Mubin, p. 128)

3⃣ The wara’us of the salaf

Al -hassan said: Religious Angels are Saleh

Hasan Al Bashri said: The essence of religion is Wara ‘(Al Munawi, Faidhul Qadir, Volume. 5, p. 52)

Ibn Al -Mubarak returned from Khorasan to Levant in his loan response

Ibn al-Mubarak returned from Khurasan to Syam only to return a pen he borrowed from there. (Ibid)

And Abu Yazid to Hamadan to return ants

Abu Yazid returned to Hamadan to return the ants he found in the flowers he bought, and he said: “This (wara ‘) is a strange/strange thing in his country”. (Ibid)

And Ibn Adham from Jerusalem to Basra to return the date

Ibrahim bin Ad-Ham departed from Al Quds to Basrah to repatriate a date of dates. (Ibid)

Shaykh Abu Ishaq Al Huwaini said:

It is attributed to some scholars – and they say that priest Abu Hanifa, May God has mercy on Him – Stole a sheep in his time, so he came as a poem or a shepherd and Said: how old is the sheep – the maximum of something lived by the sheep – So he refrained from Eating the meat for five years, fearing that he would buy from the same stolen sheep

It is caused to some scholars – and they say that it was Imam Abu Hanifah Rahimahullah – that during his time there had been theft of a goat.

So he went to a slaughterhouse or herder and asked: ‘How old is the maximum age of goats to live?’ The person answered: ‘Five years.’

So he also refrained from eating goat meat for five years, for fear that the goat meat he had eaten came from the stolen goat. (Durus Lisyaikh Abi Ishaq Al Huwaini, Volume. 29, p. 3)

4⃣ Some examples of wara applications’ today

– When a Muslim visits a Muslim minority area, in his market mixed with Muslim traders and the majority of non -Muslims. So, it is better to avoid buying animals there, because they do not know how they slaughtered, the condition of their average non-Muslims has become qarinah to take the attitude of wara ‘, so as not to fall on prohibition.

– When a public service employee, opening a drawer at his desk there is a pile of money that is not clear whose. So, do not take it let alone consider it innocently as “the sustenance of the joke from an unexpected direction” for him. The world full of doubtful as it is today, Wara’s sensitivity must be strong again.

-When returning from the office, accidentally carried away by office belongings such as ATK, or other, then do not be used for personal gain, should be returned to the office.

– In supermarkets and markets, buying drinks/packaging foods that do not have halal labels, although it is uncertain but also uncertain halal, so avoiding it is better to leave those who doubt and doubtful.

– Excessive joking or playing games, although both of these are the basic laws of being changed as long as the content does not contain immorality, but if it can damage the culprit then it should be abandoned.

5⃣Lessons and wisdom war ‘

Wara ‘is part of piety, even the characteristics of people who are truly afraid of God.
