When Zamzam Water is Mixed with Other Water

If Zamzam water is mixed with other water, does the water turn into Zamzam? For example, 1 bottle of mineral water mixed with 1 drop of Zamzam water, will the 1 bottle of water all turn into Zamzam water?

The answer: not so. As has been determined by the scholars.

Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Baz was asked, “I brought Zamzam water, then I mixed it with ordinary water so that there was enough to share with many people. Is this considered fraud, or not?”

He God bless answer,

If you say to them: It is all from Zamzam, then that is a mistake and a lie. But if you say: I mixed it with water other than Zamzam, then there is no problem. Otherwise, none of this is necessary. You give the water you have to whoever you want, or you drink it, or you use it wisely, and don’t lie, and the matter is easy.

“If you tell them that all Zamzam water is Zamzam water, then that is a mistake and a lie. But if you say that you have mixed Zamzam water with other water, then that is not a problem. (Fatawa Nurun ‘alad Darbi no. 359, 10th question)

And when zamzam water is mixed, the priority is only zamzam in the mixture. Sheikh Abdullah bin Jibrin was asked, “If Zamzam water is mixed with ordinary water, does the law on Zamzam water apply?”

He God bless answer,

It is better to drink Zamzam water alone, but if it is mixed with other things, then it is still a legal priority and you can get treatment with that water, even though it is less than just pure water.

“The main thing is to drink pure Zamzam water. If it is mixed with other water, it still has its virtues and may (be used) for treatment. However, its virtues are reduced compared to if the Zamzam water is pure.” (Quoted from IslamQA fatwa no. 153234)

Sheikh Salih al-Fauzan hafizhahullah was asked, “Some students of knowledge say that if Zamzam water is mixed with ordinary water, it will change the ordinary water into whole Zamzam and have the full blessing of Zamzam. Is this true?”

He hafizhahullah answer,

No, that’s not true, it all comes from Zamzam. Blessing is something that has the same meaning as Zamzam. Water other than Zamzam does not have the same laws as Zamzam

The blessing of zamzam is limited to the amount of zamzam in it. “As for other water that is not Zamzam, the Zamzam law does not apply.” (Transcript of the fatwa at: https://s.id/onWlM)

However, ordinary water mixed with Zamzam still has advantages over ordinary water without Zamzam mixed. But what is more important is drinking pure Zamzam water. The Islamweb Fatwa Council explained,

If Zamzam water is mixed with other water, then not everyone gets rewards and blessings from Zamzam water. On the contrary, the blessings and rewards here are equivalent to the amount of Zamzam water just because of the specialness of this blessing. This water is not the same as other water that has not been mixed with Zamzam water, even though the amount of Zamzam water is small.

“If Zamzam water is mixed with other waters, not the entire mixture has the virtues and blessings of Zamzam water. In fact, the blessings and virtues in this case are only proportional to the content of Zamzam water in it. Because Zamzam water has this specific blessing. Therefore, this mixed Zamzam water is not the same as other waters that are not mixed with Zamzam water, even though the Zamzam water content is small.” (Islamweb fatwa no. 109696)
