QUESTION
Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Ustadz asked for an explanation for this hadith: “If the Persian King had fallen, then it would be impossible for there to be another Persian kingdom.” (HR Bukhari no 2889, Muslim)
ANSWER
Wa’alaikumussalam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh
It reads in full:
If Chosroes dies, there will be no more Chosroes after him, and if Caesar dies, there will be no Caesar after him.
If Kisra perishes then there will be no more Kisra after him, and if Qaisar (Roman) perishes then there will be no more Qaisar after him.
This means that after Kisra was destroyed by Islam, there was no longer a wise Kisra kingdom or power, either in Persia or elsewhere. So did the Roman Emperors. This is also proof of the truth of the Prophet ﷺ.
Imam An Nawawi said in Sharh Sahih Muslim:
Al-Shafi’i and other scholars said: This means that there will be no Chosroes in Iraq, and there will be no Emperor in Syria, as happened in his time – may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him – so we learned – may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him – that their kingdom in these two regions was cut off, so as he – may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him – said. As for Chosroes, his kingdom was cut off, and he disappeared completely from the whole country, and his kingdom was completely torn apart and disappeared with the call of the Messenger of Allah – may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him -. As for the Emperor, he was defeated in Sham, and entered the furthest reaches of his country, so the Muslims conquered his country, and the country became stable for the Muslims, Alhamdulillah, and the Muslims spent their wealth for the sake of Allah. As he said – may God bless him and give him peace – this is a real miracle
IMam Ash Syafi’i and other scholars said: what this means is that there will be no more Kisra (Persian king) in Iraq, and no more (Roman) Emperor in Syria like in his time ﷺ. So the Prophet ﷺ told us about the cessation of his power in these two regions, and it happened as he said.
As for Kisra, his power was completely cut off and disappeared completely from the face of the earth; His kingdom fell to pieces and disappeared, as a result of the prayer of the Prophet ﷺ.
Meanwhile, the Emperor was defeated from the Sham region and retreated to remote areas of his country. Then the Muslims conquered the two countries, and the power remained in the hands of the Muslims – all praise be to Allah. Muslims also spend their wealth (treasury) in the way of Allah, as reported by the Prophet ﷺ. And these are all real miracles.
Imam Ibn Taymiyyah said deeply Al Bayan Ash Sahih Liman Badala Din Al Masih :
Chapter: He informed him, peace be upon him, of many unseen pasts and futures, and indications of his prophethood: This he said, and the reign of Chosroes and the Emperor was the most honorable king on earth, then God confirmed His message in the succession of Umar and Uthman, so that the Khosrows perished, and he was the last of the Kasroes in the caliphate of Uthman in the land of Persia, and no more Chosroes remained after him, and there was no permanent king for the Magi and Persia, and Caesar who was in the land of the Levant, and elsewhere, perished, and there was no one left after him who was king over the Levant, nor Egypt, nor the Island of the Christians, and he was called Caesar
Article: His ﷺ news about various supernatural things, both past and future, and that is proof of prophethood.
Including the news he conveyed, even though the kingdoms of Kisra (Persia) and Caesar (Roman) were the strongest kingdoms on earth. So Allah confirmed this news during the caliphate of Umar bin al-Khattab and Uthman bin Affan.
Finally Kisra perished – and he was the last Kisra – during the Uthman caliphate in the Persian region. After that there was no more Kisra, and no power remained for the Magi and Persians.
Likewise, the Emperor who ruled in the Syam region and its surroundings experienced destruction. After that, there was no Christian ruler who ruled Syria, Egypt or the Peninsula with the title “Emperor”.
Imam Ibnu Kathir in Al Bidayah Wan Nihayah:
Al-Shafi’i and other scholars said: And because the Arabs came to Syria and Iraq to trade, and those who converted to Islam became Muslims, they complained of their fear of the kings of Iraq and Syria to the Messenger of Allah – may God bless him and give him peace – and he said: If Chosroe dies, there will be no Chosroe after him, and if the Emperor dies, there will be no Emperor after him. He said: So the kingship of the Kasrai people was completely destroyed, and Caesar’s kingship over Syria disappeared completely, even though the kingship was established for them in general, with the blessing of the prayer of the Messenger of Allah. -May God bless him and give him peace- to them as they glorify his book, and God knows best. I said: It is great news that the Roman king will never return to the land of the Levant
Imam Ash Syafi’i and other scholars said:
When the Arabs used to go to Syria and Iraq to trade, then some of them converted to Islam, they complained of their fear of the two great rulers of Iraq and Syria to the Prophet ﷺ. So he said:
“If Kisra has perished, then there will be no more Kisra after him. And if Caesar has perished, then there will be no more Caesar after him.”
He (Imam Syafi’i) said: Then the power of the Kisras really disappeared completely, and the power of the Emperor disappeared from the territory of Syria completely. Even though in general they (the Romans) still had power in other places, this was because of the blessings of the Prophet ﷺ’s prayers to them when they respected his letter. Wallahu a’lam.
I (the writer) say: In this case there is great good news, that Roman power will not return forever to the region of Syria.

This shows that the Kisra and Qaishar areas in Syria, after their collapse, will remain the territory of the Muslims forever. It could be taken over by infidels at some point, but it will return to the bosom of Muslims.
