The month of Ramadan is a special month for a Muslim. In this month, there are many advantages, starting from making it easier to do good deeds, having sins erased, to rewards that are a thousand times greater.

Therefore, a Muslim certainly has different habits in the month of Ramadan in order to take advantage of this glorious time. Rasulullah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam so too. During the month of Ramadan, he has special habits. So how was the Messenger of Allah like in the month of Ramadan?

In the month of Ramadan, the Prophet used to do the following things:

Increasing charity and tadarus Al-Qur’an

Ramadan is the month in which the Al-Quran was revealed and also the month where the pious deeds performed this month will multiply. Therefore, in the month of Ramadan, Rasulullah – who was the most generous person – was at the peak of his generosity. He also always reads and memorizes the Al-Quran during the month of Ramadan.

This is as stated in a hadith,

Rasulullah SAW was the most generous and generous person in the month of Ramadan when Jibril met him, and he met him every night of Ramadan. So he studied the Koran with him, because Rasulullah SAW, was more generous with kindness than the blowing wind.

“Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam is the most generous human being. The peak of his generosity was in the month of Ramadan when Jibril met him. Jibril used to meet him every night in the month of Ramadan to memorize the Koran. Indeed, Rasulullah Hallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam far more generous in doing good than the blowing wind.” (HR. Bukhari)

Speeds up breaking the fast

One of the habits of the Prophet SAW in the month of Ramadan was that when he was fasting, he rushed to break his fast. Fasting is of course a great act of worship to show our submission and honesty to God Azza from Jalla, not an opportunity to show the ability to withstand thirst and hunger. The Prophet also reminded us to immediately break the fast in a hadith,

People will remain healthy as long as they break their fast quickly

Man will always be in goodness as long as he hastens to break the fast.” (HR. Muslim)

Doing breakfast

When fasting in the month of Ramadan, he did sahur. Sahur is not just a time to eat so we can fast in the month of Ramadan. In eating sahur there is a blessing so we should imitate him in sahur as he said,

Enjoy eating sahur, because in sahur there is blessing

“Work for sahur, you really have blessings in eating sahur.” (HR. Bukhari)

The Prophet also performed sahur at the end of the time before the Fajr call to prayer. This is as in the hadith narrated by Zaid bin Thabit,

We ate sahur with Rasulullah SAW, then we stood up to pray. I said how many of them there were. He said the total reading was fifty verses.

“We had sahur with the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, then we went to pray.” I asked, “How long is it between the two?” Zaid answered, “When reciting 50 verses of the Koran.” (HR Bukhari)

Murajah Al-Qur’an

Ramadan is the month of the Koran, the month in which the Koran was revealed. In the month of Ramadan, the Prophet always murajaah memorizing the Koran with Jibril. Every month of Ramadan, Jibril comes to Rasulullah to memorize the Koran. This is as stated in a hadith,

Jibril used to meet him every night during the month of Ramadan until he was clean, and the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, would show him the Koran.

“Jibril always visited him every night in the month of Ramadan until the end of the month. At that time, Rasulullah saw. sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam Read the Koran in front of him.” (HR. Bukhari)

Perform tarawih prayers

One of the Prophet’s habits in the month of Ramadan was performing tarawih prayers at night. This is because of the importance of night prayers in the month of Ramadan.

Whoever prays Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven.

Whoever performs prayers in the month of Ramadan out of faith and hoping for reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.” (HR. Muslim)

However, the Prophet did not do tarawih as we do in congregation at the mosque. He usually prays alone at home and sometimes prays in congregation at the mosque. This was because he was worried that this prayer would be obligatory for his people, as in the hadith from ‘Aisyah,

On the authority of Aisyah radhiyallahu ‘anhu: “Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, prayed one night in the mosque, someone led the prayer, then someone else prayed.” The people increased in number, and they gathered on the third or fourth night, but Rasulullah SAW did not come out to meet them. When it was morning He said: I saw what you did, and nothing prevented me from going to you except that I was afraid that it would be imposed on you, and that happened in the month of Ramadan.

“From Aisyah May god bless you, ‘One night in the month of Ramadan, Rasulullah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam praying in the mosque, then people join in praying together behind it. The next night, he prayed again and the congregation increased.

Then on the third or fourth night, people had gathered in the mosque, but the Messenger of Allah did not come out to meet them.

The next morning, he said, ‘I know what you did last night. There is nothing preventing me from coming out to meet you, apart from my worry that this prayer will be obligatory on you.’” (HR. Bukhari)

I’tikaf and solemnly worship in the last 10 days of Ramadan

The last ten days of Ramadan are a time of extraordinary importance. Therefore, in the last 10 days of Ramadan, he did i’tikaf in the mosque to worship and be serious in worship. From Ibn Umar Radhiyallahu ‘anhuma, he says,

The Prophet Muhammad SAW used to isolate himself on the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan.

“Truly the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam do i’tikaf in the last 10 days of Ramadan.” (HR. Muslim)

In the last 10 days of Ramadan, he worshiped very fervently. This is as explained in a hadith,

When the Prophet Muhammad SAW came in, he would fasten his apron, spend the night, and wake his family.

“When the last ten days (of the month of Ramadan) had entered, Rasulullah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam tightening his sarong, enlivening his night with worship, and waking his family.” (HR. Muslim)

Keep gathering your wife at night

Collecting wives or having sex with husband and wife during the day in the month of Ramadan is prohibited. This breaks the fast and also exists penance which must be borne by the perpetrator. However, at night, this is not prohibited. Even the Prophet still gathered his wife together during the month of Ramadan at night.

This can be concluded from a hadith which shows the Prophet was in a condition junub at dawn, as in a hadith,

Rasulullah SAW would wake up in the morning without having a wet dream during Ramadan, then fast.

“Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam in that situation junub at dawn because Jima’ not because of dreams in the month of Ramadan, then fasting.” (HR. Muslim)

From the hadith above, we can conclude that the Prophet continued to gather with his wife in the month of Ramadan. However, during the last 10 days of Ramadan, he did not do it. As in the previous hadith, in the last 10 days of Ramadan, he tightened his sarong and brightened the night of the last 10 days of Ramadan with worship.

Cover

These are some of the things that the Prophet usually did in the month of Ramadan. Hopefully, by knowing his habits in the month of Ramadan, we can emulate him so that we can carry out the month of Ramadan well and can take advantage of the moments of the month of Ramadan to achieve as much forgiveness and reward as possible.
