Hadith About Seekers of Knowledge with World Motivation

QUESTION

Assalamualaikum ustadz 🙏,,, Afwan permission to ask ustadz 🙏,,I have heard a hadith about someone who studies with a worldly orientation, then he will not smell the smell of heaven. What is the status and rank of this hadith, ustadz?… (+62 852-7236-xxxx)

ANSWER

Wa’alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh

From Ibn Umar Radhiallahu ‘Anhuma, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

Whoever seeks knowledge with the aim of imitating fools, or to show off to the scholars, or to divert people’s attention to him, will enter Hell.

Whoever seeks knowledge to argue with stupid people, or to boast in front of scholars, or to seek attention from people towards him, then he is in hell.

(HR. Ibnu Majah No. 253. At Tirmidhi No. 2654. Hasan)

From Jabir bin Abdullah Radhiallahu ‘Anhu, that Rasulullah ﷺ said:

Do not study knowledge to show off to the scholars, and do not debate knowledge with ignorant people, and do not make people choose to choose it. For whoever does that, the fire remains fire.

Do not seek knowledge with the intention of boasting in front of the scholars, arguing with stupid people, and picking apart the assembly. Whoever does that is in hell, in hell.

From Abu Hurairah Radhiallahu ‘Anhu, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

Whoever studies knowledge that seeks the face of God Almighty, and does not study it except to obtain something from this world, will not obtain the knowledge of heaven on the Day of Resurrection. Resurrection means its fragrance

Whoever seeks knowledge with which he desires the face of Allah, (but) he does not study it except for the riches of the world, then he will not get the fragrance of heaven on the day of resurrection.
