QUESTION
Assalamu’alaikum ustadz. Please explain about the iftita prayer which is performed before the tarawih prayer?
ANSWER
Wa’alaikumussalam wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh
There are two light rak’ahs as an opening prayer before evening prayers. It is a “warm up” for the next prayer.
From ‘Aisyah radhiyallahu ‘anha, he said,
When the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, woke up at night to pray, he would begin his prayer with two light rak’ahs.
“When the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, got up for evening prayer, he began his prayer with two light rak’ahs.” (HR. Muslim, no. 767).
Usually in mosques managed by Muhammadiyah, this is also done before tarawih.
But generally Fiqh experts say that is for midnight prayers outside of Ramadan. But in Ramadan, this is not necessary and there is never an example. In Ramadhan, the warm-up already exists, namely in the Isha and ba’diyah prayers. Therefore, this prayer is not found in most Muslim mosques.
